Just Engines 30 size Helicopter Muffler Review

I wanted an aftermarket muffler for my Hawk Sport simply because the stock muffler is extremely loud and certainly would not reach the noise level required by the BMFA or indeed my club. I was not looking for an expensive power booster, but instead a cost effective noise dampener that would allow me to fly my model where I regularly fly.

On receiving the muffler my first impression was 'Speed Torpedo' from Century products! This muffler looks similar to Century's offering which was quite a result, I was tempted to try the Century muffler before realising that Just Engines had a muffler of their own in stock. My views we're further justified when it came to fitting the muffler. With the Hawk sport you need to cut away a portion of the canopy to make the stock muffler fit. I found that the JE muffler fitted into this cut like a glove, literally like a glove!

The muffler screwed onto my OS with no problems what so ever and the aluminium gasket supplied kept the fit oil tight and secure. The muffler comes with one nipple, one screw, a hole in the top and a hole in the bottom of the muffler. This allows you to fit the nipple to the top or to the bottom which means you can fit this muffler to an engine that is forward facing or rear facing. I have mufflers that are not interchangeable because of the location of engine so this is a welcome bonus. It means that I can fit this muffler to all three of my models should the need arise.

At the field I started the OS and heard a significant reduction in noise, which I was very pleased about. The engine seemed to be running slightly lean so I richened the mixture a couple of clicks and took it to the pad for a hover. The pick up was smooth and the engine purred through the ranges without any noticeable oddities!

In fast forward flight the engine seems extremely happy with this muffler and I feel extremely comfortable flying a model that is no longer barky and loud. I haven't really noticed any power increase but it is the noise reduction that I was looking for and I'm not into 3D aerobatics!

If you are looking for noise reduction to a stock muffler shipped with most 30 size plastic models, this should be near the top of your list of options. I am extremely happy with it's performance and noise reduction and at half the price of a Zimmerman, it's a cost effective general purpose muffler.
